Your Car Needs a Name

Many of us think of our vehicles as more than just another asset or a bucket of bolts. Let’s face it, not only does your car or truck get you where you need to go safely, it also says a lot about who you are and what stage of your life you’re in. Some of us even develop a relationship (albeit a bit one-sided) with our vehicles.

So, if you’ve been known to have a conversation with your sedan, you are not alone. A recent survey noted that 44% of men and 48% of women admit to talking to their car. However, if you really want to give your baby some attention and affection, perhaps you need to name it. Here are some witty monikers that our family has enjoyed over the years.

My First Car was a Little MG 'Wilma'

My first car was a finicky little MG that earned the nickname “Wilma” as in, “Will ma car start?” Next, when safety became an issue, we got the “Blue Bomber”, a serious, sensible Volvo for a less frivolous time. With a little prosperity, my husband purchased the “Pimpmobile”. What a car…a black Cadillac with a gold package, fancy rims and a faux convertible cloth top! At the same time, I was driving “Big Bird”, a bright yellow VW Squareback that accommodated our growing family.

A Mini Named 'Gary Cooper'

A dear friend of mine bought herself a Mini after her divorce. She named it “Gary” (as in Gary Cooper). She claims it helped her ease out of awkward social situations, mainly couples events by being able to say…. ”I’ve really got to go, Gary is waiting for me.” Currently, my silver Saab is named “James” just because I like saying, “Home James.”

Now, if you are one of those people who believe that cars and trucks are soulless machines, just try to picture Columbus arriving in the New World sailing on ships called the 1, 2 or 3. Or, how about, “Houston, the Lunar Excursion Module has landed.” Not nearly as much fun, is it?
